COBIT - Foundation

COBIT stands for Control Objectives for Information and related Technology. COBIT is a model for control of the full IT environment and is based on 41 internationally acknowledged standards, that each covers a part of the information systems control field.

COBIT aims at providing an IT Governance instrument that allows managers to bridge the gap with respect to control requirements, IS & IT issues and business risks and communicate that level of control to stakeholders. It enables the development of clear policy and good practice for IT control throughout organizations. COBIT is designed as an IT process management tool and can also be used as an IT Governance tool that helps in understanding, assessing and managing the risks and benefits associated with information and related IT.

These practices will help optimise IT-enabled investments, ensure service delivery and provide a measure against which to judge when things do go wrong. For IT to be successful in delivering against business requirements, management should put an internal control system or framework in place. The COBIT control framework contributes to these needs by:

  • Making a link to the business requirements
  • Organising IT activities into a generally accepted process model
  • Identifying the major IT resources to be leveraged
  • Defining the management control objectives to be considered
  • CobiT defines 34 significant processes, links 210 tasks and activities to them, and defines an internal control framework for them all.

CobiTs processes and control objectives are segmented into four domains:

  1. Plan and Organize (PO)
  2. Acquire and Implement (AI)
  3. Deliver and Support (DS)
  4. Monitor and Evaluate (ME)
